Resin bound gravel is an outdoor surfacing system made by combining natural aggregate with a clear UV-stable resin. The stones are fully coated in the resin and bound together — yet small gaps remain between them, creating a surface that is simultaneously smooth and permeable.
Popular for domestic driveways, paths and patios, resin bound surfaces can also be used on commercial projects. It is widely regarded as the most premium hard-landscaping option available, offering a contemporary, uniform finish that enhances any property.
A proper resin bound installation begins well before the resin is mixed. The ground preparation involves laying several individual layers of substrate, combined with a drainage grid system beneath. This layered base is what gives the finished surface its stability and — crucially — its permeability. Water drains freely through the surface and into the ground below, satisfying Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) compliance requirements.
Once the base is ready, the aggregate and resin are combined in a force-action mixer to ensure every stone is evenly coated. The mixture is then trowelled onto the prepared base in one smooth, continuous layer, leaving a seamless finish with no loose stones.
